Suzanne Collins kills it every time! Fantastically harrowing book. I'm glad Haymitch's story has finally been told, and it was great to see the beginnings of some very well loved characters.

This felt like an elevated fanfic to please the audience after the success of the original trilogy with the clear mission of immediately adapting it into a movie, but I'm not complaining! I thought it was great - not as good as the original trilogy but lightyears ahead of the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, with plenty of callbacks and tie-ins. It was fun to see how the story unfolded when you already know how it ends.

This book gave me so much nostalgia from reading the original trilogy. I throughly enjoyed this read, but boy oh boy did the author make each death more gut-wrenching than the last.

I will never forgive Suzanne Collins for writing this book. I should be sleeping peacefully in my bed and instead I am ugly sobbing in my bathroom. I literally can’t breath from how clogged my nose is. This book was so good, but so completely devastating. Of the Hunger Games books, this is without a doubt the most brutal and viscerally heart wrenching. However, it gives brilliant insight into the work of Panem and how the rebellion, that we see in the original trilogy, started. Haymitch is such a wonderfully complicated character and this insight into his life and why he is the way he is, though heartbreaking, truly is one of the best additions to the series. Although heartbreaking, there is an underlying message of holding onto hope in the face of adversity, because you cannot win the match if you do not play the games. It is important to do more than just sit around and watch, you have to fight for the change you want to see in the world.
