Was hoping for more, honestly; I love the themes of the story (the power of propaganda and planting seeds for a change you may never see) but was hoping for a different structure. Songbirds and Snakes surprised me by having the games completed early on, but they take up most of the novel here. It’s fine but at this point I think Suzanne Collins should start a new series or write some standalones.

Will I be seated for the film adaptation??? Yes!

Great fan service that doesn’t force its way into the existing world. Works as a standalone story, an intro to the franchise, or a supplement to what you’ve already read.

I loved Sunrise on the Reaping. It’s a phenomenal prequel into Haymitch’s story that does a really good job discussing authoritarianism, trauma, grief and addiction and the intersections of these. Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for a narrative, quick read and don’t mind an incredibly sad, but poetic ending.

this book was the most gut wrenching of all the hunger games books. I could rate this either 5⭐️ or non at all because of how devastated this left me.
Suzanne Collins better sleep with one eye open tonight.

It was beautifully written and I loved the ties to the original books and it's characters, it was certainly much more brutal to read and I found myself crying with the characters.

This book genuinely hurt my soul—but I would give it 6 stars if I could. The tough thing about it was knowing that it would end tragically, what with knowing how Haymitch is at the beginning of the original trilogy. That being said, it was beautiful. It wouldn’t have touched me the way I did if not for Suzanne Collins’ beautiful, gripping storytelling. There is so much depth to every character, even the minor ones, and that makes the progression that much more impactful. The Games begin about halfway through the book, but I didn’t feel like it was necessary or appropriate to start them earlier—they weren’t necessarily the main focus of the book. The character and plot development that happened beforehand was necessary and perfect. The plot progression, the characters, the message—everything had me blown away, jaw on the floor. I may never be okay again after reading it, but it’s because it was so well-written and so good and I will just never forget it.
