A must-read for Hunger Games fans. Collins strikes again, weaving small purposeful details into a greater picture. Collins' writing style is consistent. Nothing overly floral, no cutting corners. Everything is intentional. Collins successfully uses her creative writing skills to create whole scenes and whole feelings. I have been a Haymitch fan since first reading the original three books in middle school and this does not disappoint. Like "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," everything makes so much sense by the end. ALL of the pieces connected for me.
This whole series will become a useful tool in teaching history and social studies in general, sure. But this part of a greater whole-- the rest of the series-- really asks what "progress" and "success" look like in a movement. There is probably so much I could add, especially from a marginalized person and Historian's perspective, but I wanted to throw my review out into the world while it is fresh in my brain!

Beautifully expands upon an established character, adding further context to not only him but the people around him. I am, however, in Suzanne’s walls.

Almost speechless, honestly. How harrowing, chilling, revealing, unsettling, intriguing and captivating this novel is. For those who have already read the other four books in the Hunger Games series, this is an urgent must. Not only does the unraveling of Haymitch’s games answer questions and explain much of what happens later - but they establish such a fundamental understanding of his character and motives from there on out. Filled with poetic justice, subtle references, sweet side plots, satisfying Easter eggs and more - this is a shining “poster” on Collins’ wall.

a book that shows rebellions don’t just start with one person and sometimes it takes years for those results. i could go on and on about my thoughts but i fear them being unintelligible screaming right now because i love this series so much ahh
