I had this book on my tbr since it was first announced and boy... did it exceed my EXTREMELY high expectations. I cried so much im surprised much body didn't run out of water. Each and every character was so well written and most of them so likeable I felt connected to every single one. Every death his so hard (especially Maysilee's). And one thing that this book ensured is that I would appreciate the side characters in the og trilogy a thousand times more. I realized that Plutarch truly is a mastermind and had everything thought out and planned long before Katniss. Beetee we already knew was smart but boy was he way smarter than even I though. The cameos of Wiress and Mags warmed my heart and made them some of my new favorite characters. The one thing tho that I truly loved on this book but also hated was how much it revealed about Haymitch and why he is the way he is. The loss of Lenore Dove put a hole in my heart (and his) and the aftermath of it and his reaction just broke me in ways words can't describe. This book broke my heart but now I want it broken again and again so I can reread the original trilogy and appreciate Haymitch and the others characters so much more and catch the brilliant Suzanne Collins's foreshadowing that was so clearly planned years ahead.

P.S. The bit about Lenore being named after the Edgar Allen Poe poem Nevermore and the poem going in and out in the last chapter was so appreciated as a big Edgar Allen Poe fan <3

Obsessed but I feel like thats not fair because I've always loved haymitch. This novel is so well spliced that their really aren't many plot irregularities. The characters are amazing and deep and it hurts to lose them even though you know it's inevitable.  The narrative voice is excellent feeling similar to Katniss, which is reasonable as their are similar people in canon, but also very distinct. Even from a random clip it is clear who is speaking. I do caution to not give into the hype about 'how 😭 😭 😭 ' the book is as while painful one walks in knowing that all of these people are dead and if it's not stated in previous books completely then the flags are large enough to see from space. The only thing truly holding this book back is that I want more, more to flesh out everything. I'd also preferred
if dove's death was something else because Haymitch's move with the candies was just stupid

Warning: I wouldn't recommend reading unless you have read the rest of the series. Also this book is dark even more so than the main trilogy
