devastating. a bit heavy-handed on the message of it all but given the state of media literacy right now i forgive that.

Felt a little too similar to The Hunger Games, but I guess what can you really do when the book is about a previous Hunger Games? It was nice to get into Haymitch’s character more (along with a few other familiar faces), and I think this has much better pacing than The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes did. I hope she writes about more past games (like Finnick’s, please!). I will read every book she writes in this series.

Incredibly well written and captivating. Very interesting to get a look into an earlier version of District 12 and the games, and the themes of propaganda and rebellion were incredibly well done. Don't be fooled into thinking the book won't be sad just because we know how Haymitch's game ends-  the book does an incredible job of exploring the other characters and having them grow on you the same way they grow on Haymitch. I cried several times while reading.

I don't think anyone could /make/ Collins write a new Hunger Games book, no matter how popular they are, how well they sell, or how many movies they churn out. But I can't imagine the rage and devastation that she might feel as readers have clamored for more of the Hunger Games world since the original trilogy concluded in 2010 and the movies in 2014, and society has turned into what it has. I mean, I can feel some of it in this book, but I think that's only a fraction.

Great book. Very timely, absolutely devastating.

A very important read, specially these days. Beautifully written, with so many references and parallels to the rest of the series, very sad but also cathartic... just a masterpiece.

Wow. What a sad book! I gave all the other books (minus Ballad - that was 3.75⭐️) 5 stars. This one…maybe it was too sad, or maybe I was a bit Hunger Games-ed out after reading them all back to back, but I don’t know…something about it made it not as much as a favorite of mine.

Still! What a wonderful, devastating book! I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who has read the original trilogy. Haymitch is such a better character than Coriolanus.
