The depth this book lends to Haymitch’s story is profound. We all thought we knew how his games went and why he was punished but not the extent to which he was able to sabotage the games. I felt like I was anticipating more time spent in the arena and after but more than half this book is lead up. The little tidbits and bleed through of characters was the best part of this novel. Mags, Beetee, Wiress etc

Pro-tip: dont read this in public because you WILL be crying by the end

"Nothing you can take from me was ever worth keeping."

WOW, Suzanne. You really just ripped out my heart, smashed it to a million tiny pieces and then tried to put it back together again.

Thank you for this story. truly, thank you. It needed to be said.

Spoilers below:

I loved all of the cameos that were in it. Beetee (gosh i feel so bad for him), Wirress, Mags, Effie, etc. But gosh, realising now how their games are connected to the 75th Quarter Quell in Catching Fire... i am shooketh.

Goddamn 😭😭😭

“Respite and nepenthe.”

The plot, the symbolism, the cameos, the character development, the “history repeats” vibes, the believable trauma and realistic depictions of its formation, the ending, the epilogue— this might be my favorite Hunger Games book of all.

Fast-paced but an underwhelming ending. I have questions about the parentage of the Covey girl and I found the answer to the big secret stupid. It didn’t really feel like much of a secret. I also thought the reasoning for Haymitch’s spiral to alcoholism was not good enough. I enjoyed everything expect the last 15%.

Overall Rating: 4/5

I cried so hard at the end of this and throughout the book. Amazing book. Definitely need to have read the hunger games series and ballad of songbirds and snaked first. Make sure you are in a good mental place before reading this because it will destroy you. Suzanne is an absolute genius.
