Haymitch is one of my favourite characters in the hunger games universe, so I was super excited when I heard the book was going to be about him, but also slightly worried it wasn’t going to live up to my expectations. But oh man. This book really does him justice. I don’t know what I expected really, but this is everything I could have ever hoped for. It is both satisfying and heartbreaking. This book is more reminiscent of the original trilogy than a ballad of songbirds and snakes was, in my opinion, and for that reason, I also like it way more. Suzanne Collins really hit the nail on the head with this one. This just adds more depth and more heartbreaking backstory to so many of the characters we know and love. I love the hunger games, I love Haymitch and I love this book. Will take me a while to get over this.

I grew up reading the books so I have felt compelled to continue the series as long as collins continues to write. I gave this 4 stars because for what it is, it is 4/5. The last 30 pages or so felt like a punch to the gut. Collins captures the feeling of being haunted by those you outlive, who are gone before their time, and shows in a short time how young Haymitch transitions to the Haymitch we meet in the beginning of the series.
At times I felt the book became almost too much fan service, finding answers and tie-ins for everything, and relying heavily on already established characters. I think it wouldn’t have been as impactful if not for the last bit of the book, but Collins really excels at making extremely complex things like guilt, grief and PTSD accessible enough for young readers to understand with out simplifying them.

I’ve read the rest of this series but I went in knowing nothing about this story or what to expect. So I was really excited to discover this was Haymitch’s story
and the origins of the rebellion
I love when side characters become main characters and we get a deeper look into the world.  I loved putting all the pieces together from the rest of the series, making those connections felt vital to the experience for me. I really enjoyed this book even though overall it fell somewhat flat and felt a bit predictable to me

More violent, disturbing, harrowing, and disheartening than the rest of the Hunger Games series- which is saying a ✨LOT✨
