Hey, Suzanne? Suzanne. Please. Listen to me. Whatever we did to you, I'm sincerely sorry. I don't know what it was that we did that you felt the need to emotionally torture us like this, but PLEASE. I'm SORRY. Just unwrite this book and we can figure something out, okay? My heart can't handle this.

All jokes aside, this book is seriously an emotional rollercoaster that will absolutely wreck you. I'd be an alcoholic too if I went through even half of what Haymitch endured. There were several times I had to actually put the book down because I was so distraught over the events, which is a testament to not only Suzanne's writing ability, but also to her character development. I was so invested in each of their stories that their inevitable demise still came as a shock and horror to me. I knew what was coming from the very beginning, and I still couldn't fathom it when it happened.

While this isn't my favorite in the series by a long shot, it was still a really good addition to the line up. Ultimately it was a really enjoyable read (well, if you're a bit masochistic like me lol), and I would definitely recommend all Hunger Games fans check it out. I can't wait to see it on the big screen next year!

A few thoughts:

🩷 This book, for me, really covered the horror of the games, of President Snow, in such a blatant way. The last half of the book really drove home how awful he was as a person & how oppressive his rule was over people.

🩷 I connected with so many of the characters in this book. Their deaths were a blow, even though I knew they were coming.

🩷 Once again, the impressive world-building that goes on in a Suzanne Collins novel is brutal, terrifying & deeply emotional. Haymitch’s story hits deep.

🩷 Possibly the best of all the HG’s novels.
