"I'm not much of a drinker."
As a HUGE fan of original series, that line completely broke me. All we ever knew of Haymitch was of him being an alcoholic. Always thought it was just how he was, but soon a few pages down we come across this line:"I'm not much of a drinker." It's one of the many examples of how little we really knew of these characters and games, and how much Snow truly manipulates the narrative for the audience.
I've seen the commentary that this book felt like "fan service" since Collin's brought out old (and loved) characters from the original series. However, that was the whole point. They were part of the original rebellion during Haymitch's game, and Snow knew that, resulting into their reappearance in the 3rd quarter quell. It was very necessary to show that during THG, it wasn't their first rodeo, and Snow took that opportunity to ensure any rebellion towards the Capitol was take care of. We not only got to understand Haymitch's original story, but also how the other winners of the Games got to the position they were in with the original THG series.
Is it a stand alone book? No, I would not recommend reading this without reading THGs first. There are many parallels between Katniss' and Haymitch's games that make reading SOTR all the more enjoyable (if thats even the right word) to read.
If Collin's didn't include that Epilogue, I would've felt extremely hopeless for Haymitch. With all the events that happened, I don't even blame him turning to alcohol. I am just glad that in this same timeline, he gets to enjoy peace without the Games.
Collin's loves her trilogy's, so I'm hoping to get one last book with Plutach's POV since he's one of the original people to kickstart this rebellion, and also get a POV from inside the capitol that isn't from President Snow.
