“𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙢𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙣 𝙖𝙡𝙨𝙤 𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙨.”
Oh where do I even start? Suzanne Collins is absolutely sick for this. I will never recover.
This book was truly the missing puzzle in the masterpiece that is this series. The freaking parallels and references (I can't wait to see the edits when the adaptation comes out!). The way every single thing is intertwined. And it all comes back to my girl Lucy Gray! District 12 victors, you will always be famous, and dear to me.
"𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝, 𝙞𝙛 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙮 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙇𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝘿𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙣 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜.”
𝐇𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐀𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲. He was such an important character throughout the trilogy. Having watched and read all three obviously we've been all curious of what actually happened and finally reading this, his story in his pov was so special and devastating all at the same time. Haymitch went from loving and caring so much for his family, friends, and his girl to closing and distancing himself to protect the remaining ones he had. Going from “not a drinker myself” to drowning himself in those bottles is so valid. But he kept on living to complete his poster, to keep his promise to Maysilee and Lenore Dove. And he found a family in Burdock's daughter, that baker's son, and that lady who helped them dress for the interview. I just really love Haymitch so much.
𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐝. The D in Baird is Diva! She reminded me a lot of her aunt. She is just like her. Though she's even more rebellious, I think, having lived to watch the hunger games get more and more brutal each year. And although we only see her in Haymitch's eyes, she was still her own person and saw her strength and will to fight the capitol as much as she could. She was so close to freedom, at least with what she and Haymitch can have, but of course motherfucker Snow had to interfere with those motherfucking pretend gumdrops. Lenore Dove would've loved her niece, Katniss!
𝐇𝐚𝐲𝐃𝐨𝐯𝐞. My doomed lovers. I did not expect to have all the feels as much as I had with EverLark with HayDove. Haymitch Abernathy was THE og yearner! Peeta definitely learned it from him. Every single time that Haymitch longs and thinks of Lenore Dove, I swear I hear Lover, you should've come over by Jeff Buckley in my ears because it is never over!!!
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝟏𝟐 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦/𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫 + Lou Lou. MY SHAYLAS. Knowing none of them will survive but Haymitch, I really dreaded reading the part they get into the arena. Louella didn't even make it. I love the dynamic they all had. Maybe in another universe, life, they get to be siblings and happy the way they all deserved to be.
𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐭. The reaction I had when she first walked in?! I'm sorry but I will always be a hayffie to my core (I do love both sm tho). Her appearances in this book might be the only time I feel my heart lighten. Although this very capitol Effie really had her moments, it took 25 years and everlark to snap her out of it lol.
𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞! The fact that this entire book is sort of just Haymitch telling them his story 😭 Getting a glimpse of their little family is everything to me. This and Mockingjay's epilogue are so very dear to me. The writing overall of course was amazing but this epilogue is chef's kiss!
"𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙤𝙡 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙇𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝘿𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣. 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚. 𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙢𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙄’𝙫𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙣.”
I just love and hate this book like all-fire.
