I received an ecopy of this book for a book blog tour review.
I’d put this somewhere between the contemporary and fairytale genre. It’s a lovely little quick read, where the ‘young woman’ looks back over her childhood and tries to interpret it differently. I definitely think this would have a made a good opening to a longer novel, because it seems like she’s found a new objective, which could have made a good story.

I didn’t really like that it was 3rd person but not in the usual way, I think it’s easier to understand ‘she’ than ‘the girl’ but that’s just a personal preference.

Overall, 4 stars from me, would recommend if you have a bit of free time.

This was my first time reading Ms. Heidi Garrett's short story and I was pleasantly surprise of how well she wrote and fit in one beautiful story into few pages. Yes, I admit that I was used to reading either long books (300 pages minimum) or very long books ( 1,400-1,600 pages! ) on my e-reader...well, what can I say? I really love words.. Written words , lots and lots of them!
I read Ms. Garrett's previous books which were longer ...well written and very vivid descriptions and I fell in love with it. So, when Ms. Garrett offered me to read this book, I was a bit curious.
Wow! Yes, that's my first reaction ...just reading less than 20 pages! It was really, really good. I got goosebumps. Well, not the freaky goosebumps.. but something touch my insides. Oooh, now I'm having a hard time describing how it felt.

The story begun when this young woman visit a tarot reader .What secrets might he reveal to her about herself?

As each tarot card was opened, more and more about herself was revealed.
And I just love how Ms. Garrett begins her story with these lines:

“Once upon a time, a girl was born into the heat of battle. This battle wasn’t apocalyptic in the sense of the world at large, no, the battle she was born into was rather microscopic, when considered in relation to the billions of people who lived on planet earth and the problems that plagued them. But she was only an infant, with a newborn’s limited ability to move, and no ability to leave the battlefield, so to her, it was like being born into Armageddon.”

These lines definitely took all my attention! It was like, I'm transported back in time...during the times when my Mom reads me bedtime stories. Best times of my life.

This story gave me the Cinderella vibe, yes totally fairytale like feel! Of course , there's the evil stepmom that makes everything hard for our heroine. When the stepmom hurt the little girl physically and emotionally, my heart broke. Oh, how I despised the stepmom. She is wicked!

I admire the little girl , I can never imagine how she endured all of these? Being hopeful ? That's when she heard that story about "The elves and the shoemaker" .

“And the girl began to imagine, that the kind voice of the narrator, who told the stories on the record, belonged to her real father—the one his new wife had locked up some place far far away.
And she began to think that her father was rather clever for sending a message to her from his real self.
And she decided that probably, one day, she would be able to rescue him, because now that her real mother had disappeared, he was all that she had left.”

So the girl, waited and waited for the Elves to visit her. She looked for the elves everywhere. Until a name came up: Elva. Elva became her hope. But who is Elva?

The entire book took me into a wonderful journey of finding hope ... discovering one's strength..and most of all , believe in magic all over again.

What a wonderful read. Thank you, Ms. Heidi!
