Kehyskertomuksen ja muiden kertomusten välinen kudelma muodostaa mummolalta tuoksuvan ja haalistuneen, joskin yhä varsin kauniin ja lämpimänä pitävän tilkkutäkin. Sopii kiireettömiin hetkiin, jolloin haluaa keskittyä ajatusten (ja miksei myös reseptien) vaihtoon huomaavaisen keskustelukumppanin kanssa.

Reads more like a collection of flash fiction or short stories than a classical novel. Very evocative, her descriptions of the countryside and of Marta in particular took me back to the image of the village of my grandfather in Eastern Europe. However, after a while I felt the need for a classical novel, it's not very clear what anchors all the stories together, other than a cast of characters. 3.5 stars

Gelesen, weil ich "Der Gesang der Fledermäuse" sehr mochte. Es hat viele schöne Stellen, aber insgesamt ist es halt eine Notizensammlung aus dem Dorfleben, über lange Strecken ist es, als hörte man einer alten Frau beim Herumreden zu. Es geht viel um Pilze und Pilzrezepte, neuerdings ist ja alles angeblich giftig in den neuen Pilzbüchern, also ich esse ja immer alles und es hat mir noch nicht geschadet, die dummen anderen Leute ernten immer nur zwei Pilzsorten, aber ich, und so weiter. Ich war froh, als es vorbei war (knapp 400 Seiten, fühlte sich länger an).

Gegenwartskompatibilität: Die eine längere Geschichte, die sich durchs Buch zieht, über das Leben der Heiligen Kümmernis, kommt mir dubios vor. Die Hauptfigur möchte gern als Frau leben, es passiert so dies und das, gegen Ende braucht Paschalis aber nur Frauenkleider anzuziehen, um sogleich eine Prostituierte "in den Boden zu hämmern". Kann schon sein, dass das passiert, aber es kommt mir wie eine grobe und unergiebige literarische Benutzung eines Themas vor, von dem die Autorin irgendwie mal irgendwas gehört hat.

the more tokarczuk books you read, the more you see the common threads: eccentric old ladies, woods and snow, paranormal, migration. her fiction is hard to describe as it transcends the ordinary while talking about it. I'm usually not a fan of short stories but the ones here almost did not feel like that. what tokarczuk creates is a patchwork quilt, everything is part of the bigger picture.
