The best book I’ve read in years. I’ve never felt the emotions of an author so strongly. Unexpectedly sobbed at the end. The writing is so simple and concise yet descriptive and puts you exactly in the setting. She conveys emotion without actually saying how she’s feeling but just by the way she describes everything. Also there are so many crazy twists and turns I cannot believe this is non-fiction. I love a good memoir.

im not quite sure why this is the second-most-reviewed memoir on goodreads or why it helped to popularize the genre in 2006 (though I’m glad it did !); there was a heck of a lot of dysfunctional family antics / poverty / sympathetic view of disturbed parents, and it definitely reminded me of Educated. not for me but again I’m glad it have memoirs a boost back in the day
