So many disturbing moments. And somehow there is humor. It’s a devastating coming of age story but there are hints of hope, too.

This is a very difficult story to read --mostly because it deals with some awful things, but also because a) I found the viewpoint character, a 13 year old boy, very difficult to stay engaged with and b) there are lots of layers of what is going on, all the time, and I struggled to keep track.

Well worth having stuck through having to borrow it from the library four times, each time having to wait through the hold queue!

How I felt about the book evolved as I progressed through it. Its both sad and intense, but also hopeful and sweet. There's also some ribald humor sprinkled in

I love everything Louise Erdrich writes, but this one was definitely a lot darker than the other books of hers I have read previously. We follow Joe as his father - the reservation judge - and him start to investigate a terrible crime his mother was a victim of at the very beginning of the novel. The characters are all so lively and real, and their emotions so well-described, I found it really moving and at the same time anxiety-inducing. It was a shocking novel and one I'll keep thinking about for a while.

Moving, deeply sad, tragic, and hopeful at the same time. A whole meal of a book.
