FLAMES. FLAMES OUT THE SIDE OF MY FACE. If I could give this negative stars I would. I was seething the entire time I read the book. I would never say get rid of a book, because history forgotten is history repeated; and this book is a deep look into the mentality of people from the south and why they feel the way they do even today. But, I wanted to throw it into the ocean. The fact is, that it's still revered for all the wrong reasons. It's seen as a strong female empowerment and love story that's a glimpse into the glamor of the old south. Is it a feminist book? For white cis women. Is the love story intense? Yes, and also abusive and terrible; this is not a healthy relationship for which to strive. It has the most harmful stereotypes for people of color and for enslaved people. NO THERE WERE NO GOOD ENSLAVERS. PERIOD. The "good" heroic man she loves (Ashley) IS IN THE KKK. AND THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE A GOOD THING. What the actual f*ck. Also, it's the most toxic relationship known to humans. To quote one half of the worst couple in history, frankly, "I don't give a damn" about this book, or about the racist author.

yes this book has at its heart some of the most startling racist and sexist elements in any long-praised book out there. it, however, is unfortunately quite entertaining as well.

like the movie, it's stupidly dramatic. scarlett is only motivated by greed and she has no real redeeming qualities. rhett's dashing, but he's far from a saint. even ashley with all his tenderness represents the mere illusion of serenity obtained at the expense of so much. basically every character is terrible in their own ways, but there's something charming and unforgettable about the main cast that makes this so hard to put down.

the fact that this was written during a time of different accepted racial and gender attitudes doesn't excuse the immense and inexcusable issues associated with GWTW, but as with most works of history (even fictitious and written by the losers!) we have to just understand that times have changed and move on.

More than halfway through I just couldn't stand the racism anymore. It started to get to the KKK and it was basically propaganda to Support the KKK's actions. Gross, not for me, I don't have the patience for this right now, and I suspect the ending isn't worth the torment of continuing to read.

I am at a loss for words at how to exactly explain my thoughts and feelings of this book so this review might be all over the place. There are things I absolutely loved, and things that were incredibly difficult to like. It was so beautifully written. The picture is all so clear and well thought out but why did it have to end the way it did?! More than anything this book is more about tragedy and hardships than romance in my opinion. And the romance in this book…I personally wouldn’t even consider it romance…Especially with the way Scarlett treats her relationships.

I will say that my absolute favorite part of this book was anything that had to do with Melly. She is actually so sweet and I would love to have a friend like her.
