Has aged so badly - extremely dehumanising and derogatory language that distracted from any of the neurological insights to be gleaned 2* for those.

I liked an anthropologist on mars a lot better. But this book was still fascinating.

Oliver Sacks is an eye entity, you can't change my mind.

I had high expectations for this book because of its title. However, it was a lot of medical jargon that made it difficult to fully understand without a dictionary nearby. The tales were very interesting but it would have been better if Sacks had written to a non-scientific community.

This book isn't at all what I expected, and I waffled about what to rate it for one major reason: the last third of the book. The edition I read was from 1985 and (thank goodness) we have come a long, long way in our attitudes toward people of color and ablism, and even medical patronizing, since then. Right up front, I have to say that the last section put a screeching halt on my love for the book - while the first sections I found profound and incredibly worthwhile. I don't know if the 1998 version of this book revised this section, but I certainly hope so.

Still, Sacks' ability to weave literature, philosophy, and the meaning of life into his history of bizarre brain disorders is absolutely riveting. His anecdotes are fascinating, and the leaps he makes to connect the individual stories to greater truths are brilliant.
