I was really interested in this at the start, but as it kept going it lacked depth for me. The characters and plot were quite superficial and everyone really only had one character trait or persona. I wish that there was more development and complexity between the characters, as what they said/thought/did was all the same and predictable. I like the idea but I think it needed a little more direction.

I learned so much as a writer from Schwab and was completely in love with her narration style. Poetic and amazing. As for originality, loved the creation of EOs, loved how the powers correlated with a character’s personality. I do think the calm strategic protagonist vs. the bold, mission/value-oriented pro/antagonist has been done before, but the other characters push them to be more than that. I do wish Serena created a greater power shift at times, but I love that Victor and Mitch were prepared for her. I also loved Mitch in general. Frankly, I don’t have any major complaints except now my standards for dark academia with a supernatural slant are pretty high.

Wow. I don't normally give out 5 star ratings (consider me a 3-4 star slave) but Vicious by V.E Schwab was truly an amazing book. I love how the character of Victor is both a classic comic book style villain and a hero (I guess the term anti-hero works). Coarse Eli is the worst and I found myself screaming at my book "Just die already!". Yes....at the moment Eli is my most hated character (and I mean that in the most wonderful way). I swear I could make an entire rant about how much of an awful person he was but thankfully he got what was coming to him. This book was well written (even if the constant time switches might throw some people off) and its characters deliciously vicious (I'm sorry for the obvious reference). I think this is a must-read for all superhero fans.

4.5 stars rounded up. Dark and the narrative structure fit well.
