Just a great little horror story. Very bittersweet. I haven't read Borne, but I don't think my lack of knowledge mattered much.

The kind of book with final pages you linger in.

Absolutely stunning. VanderMeer is all at once philosopher, environmentalist, and weaver of fantastically complicated worlds. I sense his work is something people either intensely live or hate absolutely. For me, his writing is like nothing else out there. If you've read The Southern Reach Trilogy (which you should, and excuse the film because Annihilation could never have captured the complexity of the writing), and you've read Borne (which you MUST do before reading this) do yourself a favor and delight in this story.

So, I didn’t realize when I read this that it was part of a series and had a book that  and before it. Oops. It definitely would’ve added another layer to the story, but I also don’t think I missed too much reading this as a standalone. I still found this incredibly eerie and disturbing, as I tend to most sci-fi dystopian books. Us humans hold a lot of power to determine the future of our world, and it always disturbs me to read authors’ visions of ways that we may mess it up.

I’m really struggling to understand what this book is about, two masters degrees in advanced psychology and I can’t figure it out. Is it about the government? Escaping an abusive relationship? Being a woman in society? Just a random string of abandoned plots thrown together?
