ugh so intense but i‘m sad the series is over

This is a great mystery series, with fantastic characters, a unique premise and suspense-driven plots. A fascinating series of books that kept me reading long after I should have been asleep, and at the expense of the rest of my TBR. Definitely a series I will be recommending!

 Why I Even Read This

Honestly, I read this mostly on autopilot. I didn’t even like the earlier books, but I just wanted to get to the end of the story. Then, for a moment, I thought oh, this is actually better. But the second I started paying attention again, I realised how arbitrary the whole profiling gimmick still is.

The Profiling “Superpower” Problem

It’s pitched like a special ability, but it’s really not. Cassie and the rest of the Naturals just… magically make correct assumptions about people without us ever being shown how. Give me something! Even a bit of reasoning, I know they said it once in the first book but it shouldn't be the case all the time and if she was that good why don't they ask everyone "did you kill so and so/ are you involved in anyways with the dfeath of so and so" and let her tell you the liar XDXDXD.

I can’t help but compare it to the show Psych, which uses the exact same “psychic/observant” gimmick—except it’s done cleverly, with logic, and feels grounded. Here, the word “Natural” just makes it all sound juvenile, which I guess is the point since this is YA. But honestly, if you’re not going to explain how they’re doing it, just make it a literal superpower.

Formula Fatigue

Every book has the same rinse-and-repeat formula:

1. The team theorises their way close to the truth—with zero actual evidence.
2. The murderer suddenly reveals themselves, usually by capturing Cassie (or someone else).
3. Said murderer tries to kill/change her and… fails. Every. Single. Time.

Like, can a serial killer just not? If they’ve gotten away with it for so long, why out themselves so dramatically? (view spoiler)

Predictability & “Plot Twists”

Speaking of Sterling, yeah I predicted he was the Big Bad. It had to be someone with that much control for this whole “cult of serial killers” (LOL, I can’t even type that without laughing) to function unnoticed. Also, I guessed the random bar lady was involved ages ago.

And don’t get me started on the mother “twist.” Unfound body = secretly alive. Every time. 🙄 Not shocking, not satisfying, just… whatever.

Writing & Characters

Now, credit where it’s due: the writing, character interactions, and dialogue have improved over the course of the series. Sometimes I even laughed out loud at Lia’s lines (and I don’t even like Lia!).

Sloane, though—SLOANE is the true MVP. The extra 0.5 stars are entirely for her.

Final Thoughts

The serial killers were goofy, the twists weren’t twists, and the formula wore thin. But there were flashes of fun in the character banter, especially with Sloane. I’m just glad to be done with the main series.
