Yikes. A quick read but lordly was this alternately chilling and depressing. I guess it had some redeeming qualities at the very end -- and it certainly was absorbing -- but I wouldn't actually recommend it for any children. I found it upsetting and disturbing. I got it off a list of "scary reads" for middle grade kids, but mostly it just made me sad. No thank you.

I was expecting something much lighter and more juvenile, but I can see why this got shelved as YA despite the 11 year old main character. That being said, I was very pleased with where the story went. It's always nice to be surprised.

So this was alright. Not quite what I was expecting. I've put in both my horror and sorta horror shelves because it gets pretty dark the last quarter of the book but I'm not sure it's horror in the traditional sense. That being said, I would definitely say it's for older kids just because of the graphic descriptions in that last quarter. I was unexpectedly creeped out by it since the rest of the book had more of a mysterious and subtle unease tone going and then suddenly jacked it up to hellscape horrors.

Ok, so I read this book in like 6th grade and I recently remembered it. The plot and story of this book pops into my mind at random times and it makes me very nostalgic. There is so much symbolism and vivid images in this book. It was one of the first books that made me feel something more than myself. I absolutely love it.

Disclaimer: this is strictly from memories. I want to reread to see if it's all that I remember.

It was a nice mystery/suspense book but the end really confused me.

An interesting story mixed with friendship, family and a little creepiness. Quinn and Kara are best friends, on a family vacation with Kara’s family. Part of the story is told in flashback and part is present day. They end up staying at a place called The Inn Between and the longer they stay, the more Quinn realizes that something is wrong. Just the right amount of suspense mixed with family and friend relationships. 4th grade and up.

Two friends, Quinn and Kara, are traveling from their home in Denver to Kara's new home in California. The family decides to rest for the night at a hotel called the Inn Between where everything isn't as it seems. Creepy, sad, and yet hopefully some ways.

This was a weird book tonally. It's sold as a "deliciously creepy book" (and the author certainly seems to think it so), but the effect is actually very grim and sad. I'm not sure it's altogether appropriate to mix themes like
Spoilerchild kidnap and murder
with fantasy horror. I've been anticipating reading this book since late last year, and I was unfortunately disappointed. It's not a horrible book, but I probably wouldn't recommend it for children.
