It's interesting reading this book with the context of Oscar Wilde's defamation court case. The preface, which was written after the rest of the book, during the time of the aforementioned case, talks of art concealing the artist and not the other way, coming across as a form of self defence. On top of that, he writes in the way of an aesthete, creates characters who subscribed to aestheticism, and yet this whole narrative tells the story of the dangers of the aesthetic life, almost proving everything that the case had against him.
It's also very interesting reading this book in a modern context. The ideas which were so foreign then make up our whole society, particularly surrounding internet culture. This book serves as a great warning to try and look past the surface, particularly for the modern youth.
On top of all that, every line is an incredible quote, filled with beauty, but more importantly intentionality. Oscar Wilde knew what he was doing, and has a truly created a timeless classic.
Also, what a fantastic ending.

After much deliberation I decided this book was worth the 5 starts for me, definitely not for the plot, but for the very clever writing and well written characters that I either despised or felt sorry for.

I’m really not sure what to rate this book. It was undeniably good, and the context in which it was written and what is has to say about that society is fascinating. From a modern perspective, not much happened in the book and there were a lot of statements characters gave that I disagreed with- lord Henry wonton seemed awfully full of himself. But keeping in mind the context, it was an excellent read.
