This book would be shorter if Henry just fucking shut up.

Second classic I have read and definitely a great choice because it was on the shorter side of classics. It was interesting to say the least, not really much I want to say about it except I love Basil Hallward and want to protect it him against anything and anyone ☝️ Strong standpoints and ideas about human values and attitudes which definitely challenged the norm (in a good way? idk, prolly not but eh) My stance on the debate whether Dorian Gray was the villain or Henry, it still feels like it was Henry because of him corrupting the mind of Dorian which he took pleasure in btw like wtf? I would say tho that it might’ve been possible for Dorian to discover the beauty of youth by himself but it wouldn’t have been as grotesque— it was mainly Henry’s idealistic thinkings that made him desire for such things. To conclude, it was an interesting read especially the ending which seemed so simplistic in a way but there are definitely so many layers and undertones to it.

I think it’s almost impossible to replicate the mirror that Oscar Wilde seems to hold up to himself with this novel.

Really surprised me. Modern for a classic. The ending was so deliciously written. The MC got their just desserts.

My enjoyment of this was probably somewhat hampered because I was reading it on a deadline for a bookclub, but I found it overall a bit too slow for my liking. That being said, there were certainly bursts of it that I really liked, particularly those that leaned more into the gothic horror themes

The writing style is beautiful, extremely evocative. Unfortunately, so much of the depth and complexity and intention of the text was lost on me as it's written for a different audience, and conceals itself in a way that means a lot of the 'friend of Dorothy' type encodings are lost on me as a general, modern reader. I bet if I had the chance to study this text deeply for uni I'd adore it but at present it didn't really impact me deeply as I was too thrown by the extremely derogatory treatment of minorities across the story to pay enough heed to the artistic/sexuality deconstruction.

I've been wanted to read this for awhile and I'm so glad I finally finished it. I believe this is my most annotated book, I love looking at all my notes. They look so beautiful.

But anyway, on to the plot: This book is very predictable. I predicted all the major events but that's not really a problem since the pull of the book is it's philosophical ideas. There were a lot of amazing quotes that I know I'll be thinking of for while.
