I so wish I could be articulate enough to portray the depth of how much books inspire and move me, this book above all else has truly enriched my life. The poetic way in which Wilde describes things sang to me as if it was a melody I’d heard before, he articulates thoughts and feelings and questions I’ve had myself seemingly forever. Getting to follow along this descent into obsession and madness was such a treat, and yet inside all the mystery the romance and elegance with which Wilde writes the words of adoration often spoken reads as some of the most moving poetry I’ve ever read. What a shame this was his only novel, but how lucky I am to even have this to turn back to!! 🩷

Over all very enjoyable and easy to read for an old book

Marred only by my subjective, personal vendetta against Lord Henry's sometimes insufferable contrarianism. Monologues could often be bloated in flowery poetics worthy of a stressed english-lit-student-3-am-essay-writing-extravaganza. The repeated term '"Harry, how horrible!" X cried ' made for a fun drinking game, and the norfolk rum was healthily consumed.
On The subject of Dorian himself I can only say that I will never accept any of my older relatives constant criticism of "The youth of today and their botox and their dramatics" lest I invite them to a certain Mr Gray and his cursed portrait.
Despite my own desire of smacking a VERY CERTAIN Colin Firth character with a silk glove worthy of an 19th century duchess, it has been an adventure. Worth the read? Yes. And as a solid classic I want to power through again? Absolutely.

this was a very unique experience. I listened to the audiobook by stephen fry and damn the way that man can act out the different characters well. the story, while not being super riveting, holds up to this day as an interesting and gripping fairytale of an impossible fight with one's own sense of morality and envy. I loved how impressionable young dorian was, and how he remained that way throughout his long life. i loved how stagnant his character was in his good sides while slowly degrading into violence, aggression and crime.
I can't possibly describe everything I enjoyed about him in a brief review, but safe to say he was entertaining if anything to follow.
Lord Henry for that matter was much the same, despite his clear uh- disdain for the female half of the population, to put it politely, i found him funny in his way with words. I found his insults to be so creative that it cracked me up each time despite how awful the things he really said were in actuality.
the main thing that gripped me about this were the characters, the story itself wasn't on the forefront of my focus and it actually bored me quite a bit at times. there's where it lost a star for me.
