This wasn’t my favorite fantasy and I’m not sure I need to read the rest of them. I didn’t love the characters or feel like they were as believable as others. I didn’t really understand their full stories or why they were doing what they were doing. Audiobook was produced well.
I liked this book quite a bit. I know this may be horrible but I was glad that Vincent died. I just didn’t like his character.
Girl.
Disorganized thoughts:
1) Pleasantly surprised by the writing - was very neat, crisp, and not overly dramatic (maybe I am just triggered by my previous fantasy reads).
2) I really enjoyed Oraya's POV. She's a trained fighter, but she's not the caricature of your typical "badass" fantasy MFC. Girl is pragmatic and to the point. She assesses the situation, makes a decision with confidence, and is a steady girlboss. I wasn't super emotionally attached to her, but that's what made the read enjoyable for me??? I could see the story unfold through clear eyes.
3) The Hunger Games-esque premise was enjoyable at first. By the fourth challenge I was like "how many times can Oraya get stabbed but escape in the nick of time." I still didn't mind too much. I was interested in getting some more plot development from these events.
4) The ending is what killed this book for me. I am still rating it 4 stars - maybe because of the cave scene LOL - but the ending really rocked me.

I really enjoyed this book. It grabbed me from the start. It is very easy to read and imagine the world the author built and characters that are in it.
I just got done finishing ACOTAR and was worried I wouldn’t be able to be invested, but I was immediately sucked in! If you’re looking for enemies to lovers, political intrigues, plot twists, vampires and humans, sprinkled with a bit of Hinger games vibes, then I think you’ll enjoy this one! Oraya’s and Raihn had such great chemistry and the slow burn was worth the wait. I really loved Oraya’s story, her being adopted and seeing how that all unfolds was definitely not what I expected. Trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible. lol.
I really enjoyed the trials, I could clearly envision the scenes because of the writing! I also enjoyed the different dynamic relationships between Oraya, Raihn, and Miche who I can’t help love.
Seeing Oraya’s story unfold, her character growth and how she got to where she is I thought was nicely done as well. Everything came together nicely at the end too but I dove right into book 2 bc I just couldn’t wait! lol.
Highly recommend it!

You know how there is a guy who makes going to dive bars and liking bad beer like a core personality trait? That guy is in this book.
Honestly this one didn’t do it for me. I found the world building pretty inscrutable and didn’t really start to understand it until til the last fourth of the book or so.

Might have been a higher rating if I read on Kindle, probably not the best format for me.

Reads more like a YA because the MC is so unsure of herself and waffles between extremes. The slow burn romance was fun and the plot was interesting but filled with too many holes for me to take seriously.
