A wonderful, if sad at times, follow-up to the author's first book, Hyperbole and a Half. I laughed. I cried, sometimes from laughter and sometimes because it was just very sad to read. But Allie is very good at keeping the reader invested and not letting them dwell on the sadness for too long. I loved this so much.

This book was a mixed bag. It has a more off-kilter and darker tone than the first book but there are still moments of levity. A few of the stories could have been left on the cutting room floor but, overall, I think this book is an honest confrontation of how nonsensical life can be while still finding humor in it.

This one is a hard one to rate. I loved her first book so much so my expectations were really high. I think what I loved most about her first book was the balance she found between heavy and lighthearted. This one was just heavy...but for good reason, she is dealing with a lot in these pages (500+ pages, by the way, which made the book physically hard to read because it was too heavy to hold and hard to open all the way to see the inside bits). There is a chapter about the ugly duckling and Rudolph the red nosed reindeer that had me laughing out loud, but the other chapters were just really sad. I think had I gone into it knowing that, maybe I would have liked it more. Also timing is everything and maybe this was just the worst time ever to read this book. 2020 for me is for fantasy not super heavy sad books.

It was nice and enjoyable. Her earlier book was darker and honestly I preferred it. But it’s lovely.
