By far the best entry to the series so far. Went from episodic to grand scale. We got so much of Verus' past and a hell of a cliffhanger. This book was also much darker then the first 3, not pulling any punches and dealing with some fundamental ethical questions about right and wrong. I love that we have a reoccurring cast of characters that we care about now and the dynamics at play. So glad I picked up this series, I have a long way to go but I'm loving it.

Well, this one got… dark. Really dark. And a little more violent than I honestly prefer. It was excellent, though, and asked a question violent fantasy novels almost never do: is the life of the hero really worth the lives of the people they kill to stay alive? So often a fantasy protagonist carves a swathe through an evil army, or takes down palace guards between them and their goal, or otherwise racks up a body count, and while a decent number of novels explore their guilt, there’s an underlying assumption that they had no choice but to kill.
Chosen makes no such assumption. I won’t say too much more, other than I continue to adore this series, and it’s worth looking at for Harry Dresden fans especially.

Der vierte Band der Alex-Verus-Reihe ist den vorangegangenen ähnlich, aber doch völlig neu. Im lauf von Band zwei und drei ist Verus träge geworden und hat sich an ein (mit Ausnahmen) friedliches Leben gewöhnt - in "Der Wächter von London" hatte ich das Gefühl, als wolle der Autor [a:Benedict Jacka|849723|Benedict Jacka|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1325965585p2/849723.jpg] sagen: jetzt ist Schluss!
Er holt Alex Verus zurück auf den Boden der Tatsachen, zeigt, dass er ein authentischer Charakter und nicht immer nur der geleckte Held ist. Er stellt Verus' Freundschaften auf die Probe.
Trotzdem behält er den leichten Humor, diesen ironischen Unterton bei, der dieser Reihe ihren ganz besonderen Charme verleiht.
Insgesamt muss ich sagen: Band vier ist absolut gut geworden! Spannend, zwischendurch niederschmetternd aber trotzdem witzig. Still loving this series. I'm actually reading a Harry Dresden book via audio book at the same time and I often get the two stories mixed up because they both have similar themes and are both amazing. highly recommend.

Excellent. I love these characters and plots. They really makes you think about right and wrong, choices and their consequences. I love the way that people don't live happily ever after and it's not all easy to hate the bad guys and love the good guys. To me its real world stay telling about real flawed people despite the magic.

I think this one was my favorite so far of this series. Unlike with the previous ones, I never hit a spot where I could put the book down. Nor did it take me long to pick it up again. Learning more about Alex's past was great. I'm excited to see where the series goes from here especially in regard to his old master.
