Прикриваючись гаслом "не ми такі, світ такий" Лігейн виставляє дуже крінжові речі за норму. Ніби каже: "Не думаєте, що це правда? Ви просто розмазня і слинтяй, що не може подивитися правді в очі, занадто м'якотілий, щоб витримати от такий от реалізм."
Лігейн так перестарався з брутальністю, що ніхто особливо не викликає співчуття (окрім може Кейті).

Найгірше, що тут було, це висновок Лігейна, разом з абсолютно кожним (!) його персонажам, що жертва зґвалтування педофілами абсолютно обов'язково має стати педофілом-ґвалтівником. Спочатку здається, що він засуджує таке ставлення, щоб під кінець показати, що, звісно ж, таке ставлення виправдане. А як же інакше?

Найбільш обласканий увагою автора хто? Джиммі! Джиммі у нас трагічний герой. Такий розумний, такий гарний, такий крутий, такий сексуальний, всі його хочуть, всі його поважають. Він сім'янин, так любить своїх дочок і дружину. Заради них він кинув кар'єру грабіжника і відкрив магазин (який молодець!).
Той самий Джиммі - це грабіжник, вбивця і психопат, людина не здатна взяти на себе жодної відповідальності за наслідки своїх дій. Злочинник, який примудрився виправдати абсолютно кожен свій злочин: від крадіжки бейсбольної рукавиці друга в дитинстві, до вбивства іншого свого друга вже в дорослому віці.

Драма іншого головного героя, Шона, не набагато краще. Тільки вдумайтесь в абсурд цієї ситуації (яка звісно теж була представлена, як абсолютно нормальна).
Його дружина йому зрадила і під час зради завагітніла. Що дещо викликало проблеми в їхньому шлюбі. Після чергової сварки вона поїхала в подорож, з якої регулярно дзвонила Шону і мовчала в слухавку, чекаючи (як ми дізнаємося під кінець під час дуже пафосного, драматичного моменту), щоб він перед нею вибачився.
За що, не питайте. Яка різниця? Треба повертати жінку в сім'ю. Бо така в лігейнівському суровому світі любов.

+ Переклад тут і правда паршивезний. З того, що бісило найбільше: постійно перекладають слово "baby" як "дитино" і це капець кріпово

This is the kind of dark, intense, relentless thriller that you hope for while reading all other thrillers. The writing, as always, is stellar. In fact, the writing maketh the novel. In places it is so convincingly depressing that I felt myself lose my usual giggly girly self. No easy feat. Think I teared up too a couple of times. This is definitely going on my top 5.

Time to watch the movie now.

More than an interesting mystery book, this novel is a deep dive in a complex and tense neighbourhood, with well-rounded characters.

I confess I was a little underwhelmed by the ending, but it was a really enjoyable reading. I’ll definitely read more from Lehane.

I liked the premise of the book, but it left me feeling very underwhelmed. We never dive into what really happened with Dave. It's hinted at, but never get any details. The motivations and storyline felt very predictable. I guessed who the killer was pretty early on (because there were only like 8 characters total). And this book was very clearly written by a man for men. The female characters were extremely simple and two-dimensional.

Overall, I didn't feel like this needed to be as long as it was for the amount of plot that happened.

Wow! I really enjoyed this one, my first book by Dennis Lehane. The book starts with 3 boys, Sean, Jimmy & Dave who are playing together when one of them is taken by two men. Dave escapes after 4 days but he's been sexually abused and no one wants to talk about it except in whispers. The story then jumps several years and the boys are now adults with their own children and regrets. Sean is a detective, Jimmy is an ex-con who owns the neighbourhood convenience store and Dave is a blue-collar worker still tortured by his memories of his abduction. The novel is centered around the murder of Jimmy's daughter and her murder brings the 3 former friends back into each's others orbit but not in a positive light.
It's a tense psychological thriller and I loved it. I also watched the movie after I'd finished the book and Sean Penn's performance as Jimmy is superb. I recommend both the book and the movie.
