Vincent is down on his luck and his money, it isn't easy for a vampire to find work in a world that doesn't even view them as human, and discrimination runs even more rampant then the vampire hunters prowling around. Desperate for blood and unable to afford blood bags, he is forced to sneak into people's homes and drink from them as they sleep. Only he breaks his rule of going back, and begins returning over and over to a delectable human.
Wesley needs to find proof that a pharmaceutical company killed his Mother, but the only way to get a job there is to "turn in a vampire" for testing and experimentation. When he realizes he has been visited regularly by a vampire at night, he hatches a plan. Vampires are are terrible anyways, right?
I think this is one of the first paranormal romances I've read that doesn't have graphic spicy scenes in it, and yet I still felt the sexual tension and chemistry between characters which goes to show how great the writing and overall relationship was. I also really liked the conversations surrounding mental health, and grief.
I do feel like I felt some of the book just waiting for plot to happen, I would have preferred if the pacing was a bit faster in some parts. A lot of the action is saved for the end of the book, which made it difficult to stay engaged at times.
Overall a very sweet read, I would read the next book in the series and recommend to anyone looking for a spice free queer vampire romance.

There was some good talk about discrimination as well as never feeling like you ever belonged. It was done in a naunced way that I appreciated.

Oh, and am I the only one questioning the title? I mean, it doesn’t not work. The wager part is a little misleading—unless it’s actually not and I’ve just read way too many shitty hs/college romances—but ig it’s noteworthy enough by the end to warrant referencing.

Chronic illness refers to vampirism. Racism also (mostly) refers to vampirism.stuckinatimeloop's review against another edition
