Bardugo has a penchant for getting lost in the sauce and The Familiar is no exception. Once again a promising story got bogged down until I barely made it to the other end. I switched back and forth between traditional reading and audiobook, just to keep my interest.

It started and ended well. The middle was a bit of a slog.

this was a very different read in comparison to bardugo’s other books that i know and love (and will be returning to very shortly) and i am grateful for that. i fell in love with the setting and luzia’s character and just had so much fun reading this. my only regret is that i didn’t manage to read it sooner.

I love Leigh Bardugo. The ability to develop very deep and flawed characters is impressive. Fun stand alone book.

I DEVOURED this book. It’s so beautifully decadent, with its 16th century setting. I’ll admit, it took around 90 pages for me to really get into it, but I couldn’t put it down once it really got going. This is a beautiful story with a surprising romantic twist, and I can’t wait to recommend it to everyone I know.

This was an interesting and spell-bounding read. I genuinely liked the main character of Luiza, which I find is a rarity these days. At first I was getting a bit confused because of the number of characters but I was able to quickly adjust. I ashamedly was not up to speed with the Spanish Inquisition but this piqued my interest in the history of it! Honestly the writing is just perfect and provides such beautiful imagery.
