I believe I got this book from Amazon First Reads. It is marked as a mystery, but honestly it feels more like a contemporary novel.

It's the story of a teenage boy who has a really rough upbringing and how he learns to become a better person in spite of it. Obviously, being a teenage boy, there are antics that go on. However, he never really seems to be mean or bad just because.

I didn't give it a lot of stars simply because it wasn't my cup of tea. I'm not a huge fan of contemporary novels. However, I do feel like it was well written and a really good insight into what some kids go through. There was a lot of cussing in it, also teen drinking and smoking.

One thing, I do think it was set back in the 1970s based on some things that occur. I recommend keeping this in mind while reading the book. Otherwise there will be some things that are hard to get around.

As far as who I'd recommend it to, definitely adults. And only if you can handle reading about someone who's been through some really, really rough stuff.
