I started and completed this book all in one day when traveling back from Japan. This was the perfect mood read because if you’ve been to Japan, you know how unique the convenience store experience is. Since the author actually worked in convenience stores for such a big part of her life, I got the feeling that a lot of this information was accurate or reflective of the career itself. There’s also lots of subtle commentary on societal norms, pressures, stereotypes, capitalism, etc. Altogether, a pretty awesome read.

A solidly good book! It was a nice fast read and I thought the pacing was really good. I felt the novel did a good job of asking whether the main character or the people pressuring her to “fit in” were the misguided ones, and it left me reflecting on whether or not a person with different societal ambitions can truly be fulfilled when they are constantly being pressured to follow the “chosen path”. The main character is so simple yet so misunderstood in a way that I really found intriguing to read. Very nice book overall!
