I was pleasantly surprised, I picked this short story up after the mention of it in Stephen King's 11/22/63 which is a favourite book of mine that I am re-reading for the first time. I thought why not give The Summer People a try? I'm glad I did.
There's not a whole lot to it, but I always think horror authors give too much sometimes and it takes away the spookiness which is a shame. The Summer People was just the right amount of eerie and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to know more.. but maybe that's just how it should be.

Eerie short story. Shirley Jackson is wonderful at creating a sense of dread and suspense.
This is more like an opening chapter to a good thriller than an actual good book. Bit disappointed

Great example of subtly building emotion. Doesn’t do too much until the author finds the right moment to get it out there. Also a good example of things slowly building up to something bad, making you think it might be looking up, and then going right back down to something worse. Overall very entertaining and exactly what I was looking for i.e. something short yet utilizing Shirley Jackson’s sense of horror.

How Shirley Jackson can make such mundane moments build so much dread is incredible.
