i had to read this short story for class and i enjoyed the ominous hints placed throughout. i'm a little sad that the ending was left open because i really want to know what happened :// but in my english class we have to make our own ending so yeah

The Summer People is an adaptation of the Shirley Jackson story for the stage. I enjoy Jackson, but was unfamiliar with with this story. It is a short tale about insular communities and being an outsider. Perhaps almost folk horror, but somewhat light on the horror. A slow burn that culminates in a conclusion the audience might or might not feel is justified. It almost reminded me a tiny bit of a creepy take on Our Town, though really the similarities are pretty superficial. Still, atmospheric and intriguing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Read this months ago. I really like the natural flow of dialogue and feels like I can imagine these people as being real. The countryside being described as something beautiful and touches of summer nostalgic, then turned into something more lonely and cold; is very nicely written. Recommend more for the realistic creepy paranoia feeling, rather than actually finding out what exactly is happening.

I hope to find some similar stories to this.

Extraordinary short story. Shirley Jackson is a very gifted writer. Must read.
