My only complaint is there wasn't enough Gurgi. Good kids fantasy.
The Black Cauldron is one of my all-time favorite movies, but as is almost always the case...the book is better. Sorry, Disney. The book took more risks and I enjoyed seeing a different story, because the movie combines the first and second book of this series (No, I didn't read the first book. Sue me.). I look forward to reading more of The Chronicles of Prydain, if I can ever find them.

TL;DR: Prydain’s Gandalf asks the assistant pig keeper to help his destroy the Black Cauldron. A boy learns appearances are deceiving.
Read series aloud to Kenneth (2004) and Holly (2007)

Oh man, this one got me 😭 excellent coming of age story. Such wonderful growth and reflection among the characters, and an interesting deep dive into morality. I love all the old Celtic stories woven throughout these books. Very creative and easy to read—if you’re intimidated by the Lord of the Rings I’d recommend starting with these books!!

I'm definitely a fan of the Chronicles of Prydain and it's so fun to return to them after all this time. The finale of this book is one of the key moments I remember from reading this book as a kid and it was so exciting to come back to. So many interesting characters in this one

It's weird because it's such a short book but it somehow manages to feel like it uses alot of words to get nowhere. I liked some of the characters. I did feel like it was a bit repetitive. The ending was a surprise to me.
The second book of the Chronicles of Prydain was equally exciting as the first installment. The author had the same group of characters with the addition of a prince which created a conflict. The group of friends went on another quest but it was different enough from book one that I didn't think it was repetitious. This book could be read as a stand alone fantasy adventure but having read book one helps with bringing the characters to life before reading this book. I'd recommend this book to any reader over 8 but especially those who enjoy a grand adventure!
