This story unfolds across two time periods: the 1940s and the 1980s. The 1940s narrative is a tumultuous love story told from two different perspectives, while the 1980s storyline features a bookstore owner with a magical ability to glean emotions from used books. Toward the end, the two plots mingle. The plot was enjoyable to unravel. However, it suffered pacing issues, and some twists were a bit predictable. Ashlyn's magical ability felt underdeveloped, almost like an afterthought used to resolve some challenging parts of the main story. Despite these shortcomings, I found the book enjoyable and refreshingly unique compared to other recent reads.

It was good and I wanted to know what happened. However, sometimes I got bored. I also felt it was silly at times. Why would a stranger be so invested to figure out what happened.
