It's a good work of comic art- a stand-alone piece solid in writing and design. My only complaint is that it was recommended to me as a good superhero comic that didn't require knowing superhero back stories. Perhaps that person overestimated what is common comic knowledge... I kept asking "who's this guy? what's his story? what's his beef?" The book still works, and I got through it fine without knowing many of the stories- but it just opened alot of questions during my read.
What happens when the Justice League retires?
Mark Waid and Alex Ross have crafted a beautifully illustrated story that answers that very question. Meta-humans are at war and things have escalated to an apocalyptic nature causing the Justice League to heed the call for truth and justice.
This one tackles interesting themes and moral issues while highlighting what would happen when meta-humans procreate. The artwork is stellar as well! Superman is the focus of this story. His demeanour is of a more mature nature, as are those of the other members of the Justice League.
“Kingdom Come” is a worthy edition to the pantheon of superhero stories for both its story and artwork.
Happy reading, everybody!

Amazing Alex Ross art and a great story to boot.
An examination of what it means to be human this is DC at its most human, most well written and most gorgeous visually.

The art is phenomenal, the story is fine but doesn’t feel special. As a non-DC fan, it kinda drags in the middle.

The artwork and art direction is phenomenal start to finish on this one. It's different from your typical comic art style, and for this dramatic, apocalyptic story, it works.
The story tells a strong "what-if" philosophical narrative debating who should ultimately decide the fate of the world - the humans or the superhumans. I've heard it proclaimed as the greatest graphic novel ever written. Perhaps if I was more familiar with the pantheons of characters introduced - even if only as background art - I would have a stronger attachment to the characters and story. As it is I know a few key players, and only one of them very well: Batman. I plan to revisit this after reading more on the main cast, to see if that deepens my involvement with the characters. Still, I feel for true greatness, this story should be a little more stand-alone.

This was an interesting graphic novel, but just not one that resonated with me. I think it was too real. The art is strikingly realistic and the story humanizes the people who (in my mind) are supposed to be more than human. I want my super hero stories to have heros and this graphic novel just had regular people with regular problems some of whom happened to be people. I have even enjoyed that with new heros in new series, but Superman and Wonder Woman i hold to a higher level.
I certainly see why this book has become pivotal in the comic book world - I could easily believe it was written this year not in the 80s. It changed the genera and for that I'm glad I read it, but I still didn't love it.
