a highly dramatic plot in a highly undramatic style. if it wasn't so horrendously slow, I think I might have adored it.

It was good and had every single one of the gothic tropes I know and love but… this book did not need to be THIS long. Speed it up a little bit, Ann, for god’s sake.

(Side note: the Penguin Classic audiobook I listened to had one chapter that the editor or quality assurance apparently skipped, since there were a bunch of weird sounds and repeated lines from the narrator… like even the editor couldn’t cope with how long this book was)
