Not as good as the first two. I guess finding out their mom in 1692 was also a time-crosser was a cool little twist? Other than that it was hella predictable. I was upset when I thought Grace died in 1912 so I’m glad that was just a coma and she ended up staying there.

Titanic would have been so cool!! It was low key dumb they simply missed their train to board it cuz like what a waste of a historical event.

Take a shot every time someone says “but God”

Hate how they’re always deciding their time path based on love (aka a man) like y’all do better please !! To be fair, Hope def would have chosen herself and her life over 1692 but then she died so oop.

Isaac > Luc

Overall, was decent but just not as good as the first one. Seems like they are getting progressively worse but also maybe it’s because the author is clearly a fucking brain dead amish conservative misogynist? Idk why I bother supporting her but I can’t help but read these books. Like if a progressive queer author wrote these they’d be so much more intriguing. Cool idea, just so vanilla and dumb and overly christian.

Also like stop calling them “servants”. They are slaves. just call it what it is. Not surprised the white woman author is white washing history.

Favorite part was the tie-in with the first book with Libby’s wedding in the epilogue.

Nervous/hesitant for the fourth book but obvi imma read it because I’m in too deep to this series.

Plot Summary
—————————
Part l
Salem Village, 1692.
The story opens with Grace. Her and her twin sister, Hope, live with their father, Uriah. They have a close friend, Isaac Abbot, who has a crush on Hope. They are both time-crossers and they know the Salem Witch Trials are going to begin soon. In 1912, Grace works as a reporter and Hope is a pilot, who trains under Lucas Voland. Hope is in love with Luc, but he doesn’t have interest in her. In this lifetime, their parents are Maggie and Graydon (from the second book), who run an orphanage in Washington D.C. A man named J.B. Thurston bought the building they have the orphanage, forcing the family to either sell the orphanage or find the money to buy it. Grace, who works for the New York Globe, realizes Thurston is doing this to spite her after she exposed the horrible working conditions (e.g., the triangle shirtwaist factory) in his factories.

Meanwhile, in 1692, their father declares he’s marrying Susannah Putnam, a younger, bitchy woman who aims to treat Hope and Grace like house servants. She hints that their mother in 1692, who died in childbirth, was a witch.

In 1912, Hope gets a lunch together with Luc and Grace to come up with a plan to save the orphanage— she’ll be the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Luc has scouted financiers and they have found lots of endorsement opportunities after she completes the flight. The prize money would allow for a down payment on the orphanage. The plan is to sail to England and then return home on the Titanic. Hope gets her pilots licenses and they travel by boat to Europe.

Back in 1692, as the early stages of the trials unfold, Grace reaches out to Isaac to see if he can help her figure out information about her dead mother. They find out they were born in Boston, and he says he knows a midwife Ann Pudeator, who worked in Boston for decades. Their father soon marries, and Hope begins to hate her 1692 life even more. Issac and Grace meet Ann, who tells them their mothers name was Tracy Howlwtt, that she did not die in child birth, and that she cannot say anymore out of fear of Uriah (their father) finding out. Later, in the middle of the night, Ann shows up in the middle of the night to tell Grace & Hope more about their mother. She tells them that she was hanged as a Quaker in Boston. She begged their father to help her, but he refused, and moved to Salem with the girls. She tells them that their mother’s remaining family lives in Sandwhich.

In 1912, Hope successfully completes her flight over the channel. They miss their train to get to Cherbourg to board the Titanic, saving their lives. After weeks of trying to get Luc to realize she’s in love with him, Hope realizes Luc has a crush on Grace. Hope comes up with another plan to obtain the remaining money: a soda company says it will pay Hope 50,000 if she flies from New York to LA in under 30 days

Back in Salem, Ann pudeator gets accused of being a witch. Also, Susannah is pregnant. Isaac tells them he visited Sandwich, where their mother’s family lives. He met their aunt, Pricilla Baker, who was eager to learn about them both and wrote a letter.

In 1912, Mr. Thurston demands more money for the orphanage after Grace visited him to try to reason. In a test flight, Hope dies.

Part ll
Hope wakes up in Salem, devastated she died in 1912. Their aunt Pricilla comes to Salem. Issac tells them she’s visiting another niece. Grace and Hope are eager to find out who their cousin is. Pricilla shares that she knows they are time crossers, because their mom in this life was ALSO a time crosser. Her other life was in 1869 New York, meaning she was likely still alive in their other life in 1912.

Meanwhile, in 1912, Grace attends Hope’s funeral. Grace realizes their grandmother, Libby (from the first book), is 17 and alive in New York, so Grace has to be careful to avoid her. Luc tells Grace that the soda company will pay her to do the flight instead. While in New York, Grace agrees and goes with Luc to find Tracy Barclay, her mother in Salem. She finds Tracy’s mom and she tells them Tracy ran away 24 years ago to go to Hollywood with a movie director (after she died in her other life). Grace has her first solo flight. Her and Luc begin to fall in love.

Back in Salem, Hope wants to get Issac to fall in love with Grace so Grace will stay with her in her 1692 life. Issac finds out their cousin is named Rachel. They meet her and she reveals she’s pregnant and also a time-crosser. Their father catches them and tells Rachel never to return and that if Hope doesn’t obey him moving forward he’ll see to it she’s hanged like their mother. Susannah claims Rachel is a witch and their dad arrests her. Later on, Hope overhears Susannah planning to accuse Grace and Hope of witchcraft. Hope comes up with an idea that Grace will accuse her and Hope will plead guilty, hopefully saving her as those her plea guilty haven’t been hanged thus far. Grace says she won’t do it.

Back in 1912, Grace tells her mom (Maggie) she wants to stay in 1692. She thinks Luc overheard her so she tells him about her time-crossing, but after she reveals her truth he says he only overheard that she’s in love with him. He then tells her that he believes her time-crossing. The next day, in 1692, Grace tells Hope that her and Luc are in love. As Susannah accuses Hope so does Grace. At court, Hope cannot bear to lie, and she is to be hanged.

In 1912, Grace completes her cross country flight and pays off the orphanage. While in LA, her and her mom find Tracy. They all have lunch and figure out that Grace and Hope are twins because they had two time-crossing mothers.

In 1682, Grace visits Hope in jail. While in jail, Rachel gives birth, with her daughter having the time-crosser mark. Soon after, she dies from blood loss. In the middle of the night, Isaac comes and rescues Hope from jail and they confess their love for each other. Hope realizes she was never in love with Luc, only the role he played in allowing her an opportunity to fly. She realizes she cannot ask Grace to stay in 1692 with her.

In 1912, Luc proposes to Grace and says he’s giving up flying and is going to open a flight school. However, while taking publicity photos in her plane, Grace dies. She wakes up in Salem and Isaac comes to her and says Hope is safe with his friends in Boston and that they are all going to New York until the trials are over. Upon arrival in New York, Hope and Isaac get married.

The day after the wedding, Grace wakes up, but in 1912. She’s in a hospital and Luc tells her she was in a coma for over a week, thus preventing her from time-crossing. Luc proposes to Grace and she says yes.

In the Epilogue, Grace and Luc pregnant living in New York. She works as a journalist for newspapers in both D.C. and NYC. She is photographing Libby’s wedding (from the first book—to the awful man she hated, the marquess of Cumberland). Meanwhile, Hope and Isaac, who are also pregnant, return to Salem two years after the trials. The charges against them have been dropped. They go to her aunt Pricilla’s house and meet her extended family, many of which are time-crossers. She finds out Rachel’s baby was adopted by someone in the Carolinas.

I love the timeless series. Not only is the plot gripping, the characters are relatable, and the history is delightful. Another amazing book!

What intriguing timelines Ms. Meyer chose. I was cautiously curious how she would cover the famous Salem trials of that time period, and I think she did a good job. Talk about “Mean Girls”! These ones making the accusations, in the name of “sport”, and then multiplying that with those who were already dealing with mental turmoils, and you can see the fire that sparked. You can also see the major bullying that went on. As Hope wonders at one point, “How many accusations had been made because of long-standing grudges, revenge, or simply to keep a secret safe?” It was interesting “watching” Hope and Grace have to live day to day during that time, never knowing who to truly trust. There is also the mystery of their mother from Salem- what happened to her? I really enjoyed following that trail and liked where Ms. Meyer took us with that.

In 1912 we see how women are beginning to step into their own, a contrast from 1692! Hope has such a desire to be a pilot and reading about planes from that time was fascinating. Grace was an investigative journalist who followed wherever the story took her. Both had hearts of adventures, both came with risks. The question is, how far is each girl willing to go for what they love?

I was not sure at first how exactly Ms. Meyer would weave everything together, as was the case with the other two books in the series. I had my own ideas and guesses but Ms. Meyer took me for a ride I did not expect! Plot Twists for the win!! This author is at the top of my list for the best plot twists ever! And yes, I am already reading book 4.
