Reviewed by a 7th grade student: Poison is the story of a sixteen year old girl named Kyra hiding away in the Kingdom of Mohr after she tried -and failed- to kill her best friend, the princess and heir to the throne. Now Kyra is on a journey to find the princess and attempt to kill her once again because she believes that if the princess marries and rules their kingdom, she will ruin it. On the way, Kyra meets a handsome traveler named Fred, and a charming and adorable piglet who seems to be her only hope of finding the princess and completing her mission. However, everything is not as it appears and Kyra makes surprising discoveries every day. A plot twist leads to a sweet ending in this blend of adventure, romance, and fantasy.
Poison is a very creative story, and unique in many ways though it is set in a fantasy world not unlike many others. The characters are rather complex, and surprising discoveries about their pasts are found in every chapter. The book kept the suspense going, and it was somewhat of a quick page-turner. Overall, it had a well-developed plot and characters that seemed not unlike teenagers you'd find today, but set in a cool fantasy world. It was a pretty good book, and should be high on a lover of fantasy's list.
Highly recommended.

This was a solid 2.5 stars. It was a cute, light read but very predictable in the plot and a little under developed with the characters.
So my review will be coming next week as part of the release events the publisher is asking for. The author, Bridget Zinn has passed away, which sucks. This was such a fun and awesome read.
Everyone should read Poison!
Also: ROSIE IS ON THE COVER!!!!!!!

I probably would say this is more on the tweeny side of YA. I think there's a fine line between childish and light-hearted and I felt like the book was more geared towards the childish.
It bugged me that it took FOREVER for us to find out why Kyra had to kill her best friend - the vague references got annoying real quick after the third occurrence with no new follow through. What also got really annoying was the repetition of things we already know. Ugh.

This was a lovely lighthearted book and a quick read. The story begins with Kyra, a 16 year old potions-master, who is on the run for attempting to assassinate the princess... who also happens to be her best friend. Soon she acquires the most adorable little sidekick -- a small magical tracking pig. I know -- it sounds odd, but he has a cute little personality, and in my opinion, is a great addition to the story.
Over the course of the novel we learn the back story, meet some new characters, and read through surprising twists and turns. Some actually surprised me! I loved it. Loved.
The only negative thing that takes away the 5 star rating for me on this one is that it seems like the editing could be a little cleaner -- especially toward the end of the book. Things just don't seem polished, if that makes sense. But, in her defense, the author died from cancer 2 years before this book - her debut novel - was published, so I don't know if the editing revisions would have been better had she done them -- or if someone else even did them for that matter. It's sad to me that she didn't live to see her first book published... and also sad that we won't be reading anything new from this talented author. 4 of 5 stars.

This book was such a cute fantasy! It’s not really long (stand-alone book), doesn’t have tons of characters to remember and you don’t have a whole map of the land to memorize. I like those things most of the time, but once in a while it’s nice to have an easy read while still having it a fantasy.
The added element of potions and poisons and a bit of witchy magic later on really got me loving this book. I was worried that the length wouldn’t be enough but I actually got absorbed shortly after I started reading. Kyra is such an interesting character, a master of potions, who tried to kill her old best friend and is now on the run. Why she felt she had to do that though, you will see as you read but it’s for a good reason. The little pig Rosie that joins the journey later is so cute and she’s actually on the cover too! Fred brought the comedy during this and his interactions with Kyra were awesome and of course funny.
This book was very fun to read and a nice fantasy novel that I think others would definitely like, especially anyone being introduced to this genre.

This was a really, really cute middle grade novel. I'd probably give it 3.4/4 stars.
The Chicago Tribune said "If Meg Cabot were to write a Tamora Pierce novel, this is the one she'd write." As fans of both authors, I can say that is true. I really enjoyed the book, and am sad that there cannot be any sequels. It was very clever and enchanting.

This is very much a middle grade book. I would have loved it as a grade schooler or a middle schooler, but it felt much too young for me.
This really is perfect for, say, a 5th grader. It’s got a cute pig companion and very modern, zippily comic dialogue and a very clear good versus evil plot.

This was a nice read. There was nothing that was over the top about it. The characters were decent and the setting was easy to envision. The book was a quick read as well.
