Poison is different from most of the fantasy I’ve read, either YA or otherwise. It’s lighthearted and whimsical, and never takes itself too seriously. I’ll admit, my personal preference normally trends a bit darker, but Poison was a fun read that kept me smiling from beginning to end.

From the first few pages, it becomes clear that Poison is a different type of high fantasy. It’s not Lord of the Rings. It’s not even The Princess Bride. Don’t let this scare you, but if I had to find something to liken it to in tone, I’d probably have to pick…A Kight’s Tale. Yes, that terrible Heath Ledger movie. (That I kind of love anyway. Shh, don’t tell.) It’s got that same mix of medieval setting with modern language and humor, and though the stakes are high, the situation never really feels truly dire, because that’s not the tone of the story.

Kyra isn’t the most likable heroine I’ve ever read, but she’s fun. As the Master-Potioner-turned-attempted-assassin, she doesn’t really turn the trope on its head, but she gives it a refreshing spin. She has her share of cleverness, but also isn’t immune to the semi-regular embarrassment that comes with her not-so -developed social skills. But she doesn’t go SO far into the land of the socially inept that it becomes strange that she catches the eye of the Good Looking Guy. Whose name is Fred, by the way.

Fred is a fun character. Yes, he does arrive on the scene as Good Looking Guy, but he quickly displays a carefree and quirky personality that won me over. But the real star of the story, in my opinion, is Rosie the Magical Piglet.

You know a story is going to be fun when there’s a magical piglet involved.

Together, Kyra, Fred, and Rosie search for the princess, thwart bad guys, and endeavor to save the kingdom. There’s magic in the from of witches and potions, but no sweeping, glittery spectacles. There’s road trips and sword fights and court intrigue, but with none of the grittiness that normally accompanies these things in fantasy. Part of me missed the grit (seriously, I think this was the best fed and least financially challenged group of fantasy travelers I’ve ever encountered), but grit would have clashed with the playful tone of the book.

This story a fun, frolicking adventure that enjoys making its readers smile and laugh. The pages turned quickly, and the plot kept me engaged from beginning to end. If you’re looking for something fun, friendly, and full of whimsy, check it out.

A great story of a master potioner on the run for attempting to assassinate the princess, who is also her best friend. Kyra picks up a few new and interesting friends on the way to complete her mission, kill the princess or the kingdom shall fall.

Wish Bridget was here to bring us many more stories just like this one!

I don’t get why I didn’t read Poison by Bridget Zinn sooner. After all, it has been sitting on my kindle for a few months and was an awesome light hearted read. I really liked that it was a story that didn’t take it self too seriously and was actually humorous and fun. It was a nice breath of fresh air between the heavier and more serious, dour sort of books that I’ve been reading. Also I hate this word, but Poison is totally ‘squee’ worthy! YES! I SAID SQUEE! Because that’s what it is.

Chock full of action, adventure, and romance! Kyra is a strong, entertaining, and easy to relate to character.

"Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom's future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend." The beginning of her story draws you in keeps you guessing at to Kyra's ture motivation. You can't help liking her even though she's trying to kill her best friend. The real bad guys of the story are also well written and easy to root against.

I love Fred too and it is easy to see why Kyra can't get him out of her head. Zinn does a great job throwing in twists and turns that keep you interested as Kyra's story unfolds. If you liked The Girl of Fire and Thorns http://tinyurl.com/m6ey5rl or the His Fair Assassin Trilogy http://tinyurl.com/n7o6x4x you'll like this one!

"Poison"is published by the Disney group. And ironically all I could think as I read this charming novel was that is should be made into a Disney movie right now. Right this second. It would work in either live action or cartoon form. I mean come on...the heroine's main companion is a pig. How stinking cute is that? Speaking of the pig, have a look at that adorable cover. Defiant heroine with a potion bottle and adorable pig in a forest fantasy world. Squeal! Ok, I need to get my review back on track.

Can you tell yet that I absolutely loved this book? I was captivated from the first page. I will say that this book wasn't exactly what I had envisioned from the synopsis before I purchased it for my Kindle. I thought it would be more like Sarah Maas' series "Throne of Glass" or maybe even like Rae Carson's "Girl of Fire and Thorns" series. But what else do I love as much as I love those types of fantasy series? I love fairy tales. And "Poison" ended up being the perfect mix of fairy tale and fantasy.

Teenage Kyra is a potions master. A really good potions master. But as we begin our adventure, she is in trouble. She has tried to kill the princess...Kyra's very own best friend Ariana. Now she is on the run from the King's Army and her ex-boyfriend is along for the ride to try to track her down. We are fed little bits of the story at a time. I mean we can figure that Kyra is the heroine so there must be a reason for all of this. But it was pure fun watching each tidbit be revealed. The cast of characters is stellar. We have a spunky, talented and dangerous heroine in Kyra. She has that adorable pig. And then through her adventures she meets casual and funny Fred and his canine companion. The foursome get into quick a bunch of madcap and thrilling adventures as they journey to the story's conclusion. Everything is resolved in a wonderful Disney ending and no plot points are left dangling.

This was a completely enjoyable and beautiful story and even though I have a TBR pile 300 books high, I was very sorry to see "Poison" end. Bridget Zinn was a very talented author and she wove quite the magical tale with "Poison". Its one I can see myself re-reading again and again and encouraging middle school children through adults to read. I was very saddened to see that the author recently passed away. Its a shame we won't have more books like these to come. This has made my top books list for the year to date.
