I didn’t exactly know how I was going to write this review. I didn’t have high expectations of Poison when I started it, and when I finished it I didn’t really know how to rate it. If I could describe Poison in one word, I would have to say that it was cute.
Poison is supposedly a teen novel, but if you ask me, it’s more pre-teen. The style of writing was screaming juvenile, as did the characters. I didn’t think it was a bad book, it was actually pretty good. I even laughed out loud in a couple of places. It just wasn’t the teen novel I was hoping for.
I have to admit I was thinking this book would be a lot like Splintered by A.G. Howard. I don’t know why, but I think it was the cover. It wasn’t until I got a quarter of the way through Poison that I knew this wasn’t going to be the story I though it was. Splintered is a dark, morbid story that throws you into a world of whimsical chaos. Poison was just whimsical. No gore or frightening scenes, and there was only one lame twist in the whole book.
I rated Poison 3/5 stars. I know, I just trashed this book and then I gave it a good rating. That’s because I felt that this book was a cute little story that was good for a younger audience, but that’s about it.

This was a cute fantasy, but I think it may be more suitable to middle-grade/younger teens (says the woman that is already way out of the teen age range so take it with a grain of salt)
This one was cute, but a bit forgettable. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but it just didn't have a lot of depth. I think part of the problem is that I'm comparing the MC as a sneaky, potion-brewing magician. Or maybe a taste-tester/assassin type like Yelena, or a wizarding student like Hermione. Either way, compared to those female MCs, she's just okay.
Part of it was the length. This was a shorter book, possibly due to the untimely illness and eventual death of the author. If she'd had a chance to make this book longer, give us more depth and development, then it could have been much stronger.
Ugh it feels evil to say this book was just "okay" when 1) the author died tragically and 2) so many bookish friends adored it. Ah well, such is life.

Wonderful romp with great characters and impossible to put down. Breaks my heart that the writer passed away.
This is just a lovely little YA fantasy/romance. It is lighthearted and magical and the main character is a feisty, strong 16 year old girl. Kyra is a potions master, who, after having tried and failed to kill her best friend, the princess, is on the run and is still trying to figure out a way to kill the princess. Armed with a magical piglet and a handsome, and rather bothersome sidekick, Kyra sets off to save the kingdom from the now evil princess. I totally loved this story and highly recommend it.
