A very honest, funny, lean book about Myriam’s life from childhood through college. Empathetic and not as mean as the title implies. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to step into the shoes of someone else, to Chicanes, writers, poets, artists, gays, shes, theys and queers. CW: This book centers around a gender/sex-based crime and the author’s experience with sexual assault and PTSD.

This book opens with a very graphic murder/rape scene that left me feeling unsettled. I realized I haven’t read enough from this author to trust that a jarring scene like that wouldn’t smack me in the face again. Everytime I picked this book up, I felt myself bracing for the worst. This memoir is also told in vignettes and I found it difficult to find a rhythm in the writing.
