Powerful, emotional, heartbreaking. This book ocillates between Jerome as a living, breathing, aspiring, kind boy to a ghost who is learning how to forgive and say goodbye. This gets right to the heart of racist attacks in America. It digs into the indoctrination about race, racial hierarchies, and 'race wars' that have been in place for centuries. And through the tools at hand for kids today. Jerome as a ghost visits the daughter of the white cop who shot him. Together, through the library and the internet, they learn about their ghost friend Emmett Till and the systemic racism that caused his death. They see the ripples of slavery and white supremacy in the present day murders of unarmed black people by cops. So many innocent black lives lost. This novel gives one a chance to tell his story from beyond the grave in a way that will inspire readers to speak up about the things they see and make change in their communities and globally. Really powerful. On the pulse of American racial politics and relations.

Great book for middle school. Extremely relevant and it is brought up in a nice tactful way.
Such a great middle school book, simple reading level. Includes some historical background and does an excellent job of covering the topic of racism and death of young black boys.

My 7th grader is reading this in class. He came home saying I definitely need to read. I’m very glad I did. This is such an important read for all. Highly recommend to read and discuss with middle school aged kids. Books like this help change the world.

This book was amazing! I read it in two days and I could have read it faster if I wasn't as busy. I really enjoyed the story being told from the victim's point of view as well as those on the opposing side and how they view it. I feel like this is an ideal book for younger children to begin dialogue on such an important yet sensitive topic.
