Usually I am not into ghosts in a book, but this was really well done. I know this is supposed to be for young readers but I thought it was pretty good for anyone. Very timely book choice. I listened to the audio and it was quite good, but also quite short. I appreciated the relationship Jerome made after he was dead and how he made a difference in the world, at least for one person, as a ghost. It was a nice book. 4.5/5 stars.
A very relevant read on racism, police brutality, and the BLM. A quick, heart breaking read that I think would be most appropriate in educational settings. Ghost Boys gives those of us not experiencing racial injustices a tiny look into what POC still gave to this day. It also discusses the importance of allies and what we can do to support POC.
I definitely would recommend this book since the book starts at the climax of Jerome being shot, drawing people in making them want to keep reading to see what events had led to Jerome’s death and what Jerome does as a ghost to move on after death. It’s like even though I’m a 15 year old, Caucasian, and a female I felt like I actually was in Jerome’s place as I read the book, “Ghost Boys”. It was like I could feel what he was feeling and it was amazing since not many books that I've read that are in 1st person have drawn me in like that before. At the very beginning I was hooked like “oh what’s going to happen next-!?” The author, Jewell Parker Rhodes, did a great job at portraying the book like it was in the perspective of a young boy. The only reason why I would rate this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because the ending was confusing. The ending could've been a lot better, but it also could have been much worse. Worse being they didn’t put in the last chapter “Dead: Last words” for it hints at Jerome moving once and if they hadn’t put that chapter in then the reader wouldn’t really know whether or not Jerome had moved on after death. Though the ending could’ve been better if the last chapter had been a bit longer and more explanatory. With it so short and brief it left me puzzled. I didn’t really know if Jerome had actually moved on or not. But don’t let this stop you from reading ghost boys for the rest of the book greatly makes up for the poor ending.

This story follows a twelve-year-old boy named Jerome who is shot by police for playing with a toy gun. A good scene for a read aloud begins on page 42, Jerome has befriended a new student named Carlos. Jerome hides in the bathroom during lunch to avoid a trio of school bullies and teaches Carlos the same. But the bullies discover them...
The story is told in flashbacks. As a ghost the only person who can see him is Sarah, the daughter of Officer Moore - the man who shot Jerome. Jerome also meets and learns the story of Emmett Till. The history lessons are cleverly interwoven into the story.
