Ghost Boys

This is a fairly short read, I read it in an afternoon, my 12 year old read it in two afternoons. I don't feel the need to recap the book here, I'll just say that I appreciated the conversation this allowed me to have with my twelve year old.

I’m not exactly the target audience for this middle-school book. I read it so my daughter and I can discuss it when she reads it. I thought it was a well-written, age-appropriate book that addresses a tough subject matter.

3.5

Eloquently tells a tragic tale that rings too familiar. Should be part of a middle school essential reading list. Read aloud. Discuss. Bring change.

This story left me speechless. The structure and voice was perfect, embodying a young boy trying to understand racial violence and injustice. The idea of including Emmett Till's story and the names of other Black boys murdered was genius and really brought the themes home. Sarah's character was a pleasant surprise. With her story,Rhodes attempts to bridge the harmful gap that causes so much hate.
I would love to teach this book in class, but I imagine in this day in age, I would get in some major (good) trouble.

A short but powerful novel giving voice to the Tamir Rices, Michael Browns, and the Treyvon Martins in our towns and cities. Black boys killed by prejudice and racism, killed by men in positions of power. I liked the story of the families and children impacted by the injustice. This book is a call to action. Would be a great middle or high school book for discussion.

An important book to read and share. Thank you Matthew Winner for encouraging me to read it.

Excellent book YA readers

I read this book because it was recently banned in a Florida school district because the police union said it is “anti-police propaganda.”

There are a lot of books written on the topic of POC being shot/killed by white police officers. This one is written specifically for middle grade readers. Ghost boys provides an excellent way to start open and honest conversations about many difficult topics- race, prejudice, ways we, as a society, can work on changing things…

I hope that by banning that book the kids in that Florida school district will want to read it even more.

I absolutely blazed through this book. It was beautiful, and devastating. I really hope this becomes a school standard book, as it's a great starting point for many necessary conversations.
