Started reading Ghost Boys yesterday and was holding back tears as I finished it on the bus today. Racism, bullying, inequality, and brutality through the eyes of a 12-year-old ghost grappling with his death at the hands of a white police officer. The story flashes between the last days of Jerome's life and the beginning of his afterlife as he watches his family mourn for him and his murderer stand on trial. This book is YA at its finest, simple and accessible yet deeply complex. The story is tragic and heartwrenching, but it introduces hope for a better future, a future where stories like this will no longer exist.

“I’d barely turned, sprinting. Pow, pow. Two bullets. Legs gave way. I fell flat. Hard.”

I read this as part of the Black Coffee with White Friends: Cream and Sugar book club.

This book was heart wrenchingly powerful. Told from the perspective of Jerome, a 12 year old gunned down and murdered by a white cop. Jerome works through his death by visiting his family, his friend, and Sarah, the 12 year old daughter of the cop who killed him. I think Sarah’s “awakening” in this book is what all white folks desperately need in order to make change happen.

I plan on buying this book to have in my classroom library and would recommend reading this to anyone.

Interesting twist on looking at racism issues

It took a different turn than I thought. It felt like a teachable moment instead of showcasing the sadness of losing life at 12 due to racism. The afterword was beautiful but the middle/addition of Sarah through me off. I liked the relationship between Carlos and Jerome.
