I was excited to find this on the new books shelf of the library before my recent travels because I had seen it listed on so many "best" lists. It is a compelling and damning parable of life in the wake of climate change. A lot of it is very dark, and sometimes even painful, but there are moments of levity and really sharp insight. It makes a serious impact without ever feeling preachy.

I like this type of book if it's done well - dystopia in some way with a unique point of view. This has bits that reminded me of Saramago, parts like "I who have never known men", and parts wholly unique. I especially liked the biblical allegories, realizing every once in a while there was another one I hadn't thought of yet.
