I loved the plot of this book, the cobots, the mystery around Abbie's disappearance, the intricacies of her relationship with Tim. That being said, the stuff about autism did seem, at times, rather archaic. Towards the end it seemed to show the polar opposites between Abbie and Tim and how they wanted to help Danny. Somethings, however, just felt a little off with it at times. I am aware that autism is a spectrum and some autistic people or kids with CDD will have similar experiences to Danny but to say, to generalise that, Autistic people are unable to love or be empathic seems a stretch.

Story was okay, pretty interesting. But the sheer ablism and depictions of autism was astounding. Particularly as the author has an autistic son. No refuting the harmful stereotypes, simply comparing them to robots with no humanity or empathy. Really could've had a better discussion regarding ABA. Done sloppily and harmfully.

Immediately no. This book is so dehumanizing of autistic people, highly recommend sifting through goodreads to get to some own voices reviews.

Would have benefited if the author had spoken to autistic adults before writing a plot involving autism. The result is quite an ableist toned book that's quite uncomfortable for adult neurodivergent readers and those who know them to read. It's unfortunate because otherwise it's a remarkably well done book, and would have otherwise likely been a favourite of mine.
<Spoiler>The plot does eventually support the characters decision to not use ABA therapy for her son, a therapy which most autistic adults consider abuse, but the book still includes lines about autism "stealing" the couple's child, and gives him a rare form of autism that develops age 5, which supports this ableist narrative of autism "stealing" a healthy child, which is a narrative that harms a lot of autistic children and adults. Furthermore the author's end note makes clear he DOES support ABA, just not the most vicious original form of ABA. </Spoiler>
