I absolutely loved this book and I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel in 2012! Deborah Harkness had me hooked from the very first page. I always found historians and old libraries romantic, and this story compounded that particular fantasy, since the reality was something I haven't yet experienced. And as for her descriptions of 'creatures' and how they integrate with human society, well, that is something I totally agree with. In fact, I have held these exact same views all my life, and now someone has finally portrayed them in an intelligent, interesting story which leaves plenty of room for further sequels. This is a vampire story for intellectuals, regardless of their views on the paranormal genre. And I love the historical references too...

I'm pretty annoyed by both the main characters. Also, why does the author keep describing (in the most boring prose possible) what the characters are wearing, and how things smell?
Very enjoyable. I like the mix of supernatural and historical elements. I wouldn’t mind if it had been a little sexier. I will probably start reading volume 2 tomorrow so I guess that means - it’s good :)

I really enjoyed this book. It appears to be the start of a series, and I can't wait for the next one. Deborah Harkness has found a way to write about a world with witches, daemons, and vampires and not make it ridiculous.

Boring and relentlessly polished characters: one star for the plot; alchemy and history
