The premise of the book is ridiculously interesting, but there were times when it felt like there was too much exposition without advancing the plot. I'm also not 100% sure what the plot of the book was actually supposed to be. I understand this is the first book of a trilogy (at least at the time of publication, now there are more books?), but the plot did not feel like it concluded... You are just left in a cliffhanger.

A decent read, lots going on, it could have had less filler, was long enough

Overall I enjoyed the book and the setup for the overall plot of the series. Some parts were strange to me and felt kind of..off... but they weren't horrible enough to make me not enjoy the book
Graphic: Panic attacks/disorders, Torture, Violence, Blood, Death of parent
Moderate: Death
OK. So I think Harkness' strength is her writing ability (she's truly gifted, in my opinion) and her crafting of characters. She hooked me into the story with these two elements of her novel. That's saying a lot because I haven't gotten into the vampire/witch themes much. But about a third of the way (I think it was at 35 percent on my Kindle), it abruptly halted. It was if I had entered a different novel - a kind of vampire Harlequin romance or something. Honestly, I was frustrated because she had done such a great job up to that point. I muddled through about 150 long-winded pages dealing with our vampire and his past, and then BANG, I was back into the originial Harkness novel that wooed me in the beginning! I think her editor should have trimmed the excess in the middle for the author's and readers' sakes. It would have made it a great read. If it had been a little more lean in those passages, I would have given this novel another star because her story definitely interested me. Having said that, I'm currently reading sequel so I can find out what happens! :)
Enjoyable story though I'm not sure how I enjoyed the attachment style between the two main leads. I had thought it was a more slow burn but they get involved with each other pretty quickly. I am interested to see what the sequel holds.

Is it too much to say I hated this long book? The protagonist is inconsistent. When I first started reading this I thought (and hoped) we were going to have a strong fmc, but ended up having Diana do a 180 to become frail and submissive in a span of a few weeks. It is astonishing how many times someone can black out, pass out from being tired and have attention draw to their eating habits in the span of a few chapters.
